In December 2003, my parents had my older brother named Enoch, who was born sleeping at 22 weeks' gestation. During that difficult time, my parents were still hopeful regarding the future plans that God had intended for them.
After countless tears and prayers, my parents were then blessed with their rainbow baby less than a year later when I was born at 25 weeks and 6 days' gestation in late August 2004.
My parents were obviously traumatised from their past experience of parenthood as well as still grieving the loss of my brother. But due to the amazing support from the neonatal team and the ongoing prayers at home, I was able to survive from such a traumatic experience of life. Now, I am 20 years old and in my final year of children's nursing at university.
The reason why I wanted to become a nurse is because of the determination, commitment and passion that the nurses showed in the care that they provided to me and my family during my time at the hospital up until my childhood. My auntie who is a nurse as well also had an impact and influence upon my decision into wanting to work in this profession.
The experiences that my parents have shared with me, about the care that they received at the time that from the neonatal team, was that they were very understanding and supportive towards their needs as well as mine. The neonatal team showed a lot of sympathy for what my parents had to go through regarding the grief of my older brother. But they also showed a lot of compassion, towards the hope of parenthood that my parents gained, after I was born.
Being able to gain a clear understanding about my journey of life is what inspired me to become the nurse that God intended me to be so that I can show my kindness to those who need it the most.
