The video series below has been created to explore the psychological impact of a neonatal stay and to delve deeper into the challenges faced particularly by those who already experience health inequalities.

We are delighted to share parent perspectives as well as videos from partners, the Relational Practice and Black Mothers Matter

The psychological impact of a neonatal stay

Bliss and the Relational Practice have collaborated to create a series of short videos explaining the psychological impact of neonatal care. This introductory video, explores the relational and psychological impact of a neonatal admission and what can be done to support parents and healthcare professionals. It highlights what babies, families, and staff need on a neonatal unit, what gets in the way, what the consequences of this are and what can help. Our thanks to Dr Davy Evans.

How the psychological impact can be compounded by experiences of marginalisation

It's essential to acknowledge that every baby and family come to the unit with a unique combination of needs and experiences, and for many the psychological impact of their neonatal experience will be shaped by the health inequalities they have and will experience. This video explores what this can look like, the impact and how it can be addressed on the unit. Our thanks to Dr Davy Evans.

The culture of a unit and how this can be developed to support parents

This video explores how neonatal teams can create conditions to support positive relationships and what is needed to enable this. It also covers the role of psychological professionals in supporting relationships between staff and parents. Our thanks to Dr Davy Evans.

Huge thanks to Hayley, Rachel, Jawahir and Edvige.

Supporting Black families for equitable outcomes on the neonatal unit

We are delighted to have partnered with Black Mothers Matter to bring you two videos exploring the mental health of parents racialised as Black on a neonatal unit. This first video provides helpful context to this issue, as well as exploring key themes that are particularly relevant within the neonatal care setting, to help support FICare delivery that is accessible for all. Our thanks to Sonah and Caprice.

Practical tips and reflections for supporting Black families through an antiracist lens

To follow on from the video above, the Black Mothers Matter team explain a little more about the concept of cultural safety and also provide some practical reflection prompts and sentence stems to support improved communication on the neonatal unit. Our thanks to Sonah and Caprice.
