News > Remembering Professor Leila Duley for her pioneering research into care of premature babies

Professor Leila Duley (R) is presented with the 2016 Bliss ‘Advancing Care through Research’ award by Bliss Chief Executive Caroline Lee-Davey (L)

We are extremely saddened to hear of the death, in December, of Professor Lelia Duley, whose incredible work made a significant contribution to neonatal research over many years.

As Director of the Nottingham Clinical Trials Unit, Professor Duley led pioneering research into the early care of very premature babies, championing approaches that placed families at the heart of clinical decision making. Among her many research achievements, her leadership of the Preterm Birth Programme led to increased understanding of a range of aspects of care for babies born below 32 weeks, which has influenced improvements in clinical guidelines as well as further research.

Professor Duley worked closely with Bliss to ensure that the lived experiences of families informed the direction of this research, and in 2016, Bliss honoured her with an ‘Advancing Care through Research’ award in recognition of her contribution to improving outcomes for premature and sick babies across the UK.

We give our deepest condolences to her family, friends and colleagues at this time.
