Are your candidates #NeonatalCareAware?

With a General Election around the corner, we want every candidate to show their support for premature and sick babies if they are elected.

Every year, over 100,000 babies are born needing neonatal care across the UK. Many babies will need specialist medical care for days, weeks or months until they are well enough to go home. Sadly, some babies will never go home at all.

We need your help to make sure every candidates commits to putting neonatal care on their priority list if they are elected. Will you take action now?

More babies are being born needing neonatal care every year. Doctors, nurses and allied health professionals do exceptional work to keep the NHS' tiniest patients alive - but our neonatal services are under pressure.

Will your candidates be #NeonatalCareAware?

Take action now!
  • There is a severe shortfall of neonatal nurses, doctors and other professionals.
  • A quarter of the sickest babies are born in a hospital which isn't suited to their needs, preventing them from having the very best outcomes.
  • There is wide and unwarranted variation in neonatal mortality rates across the UK, and neonatal mortality rates have risen among Black and Asian babies.
  • Thousands of parents, dads and partners in particular, have no choice but to return to work while their baby is still sick in hospital.

But there is opportunity for change

We want all newly elected MPs to commit to being #NeonatalCareAware and for the new Government to commit to:

  1. Uphold and meet the National Ambition to halve the rate of neonatal death, stillbirth and severe brain injury by 2025 - and to reduce the rate of prematurity, as per the Pregnancy and Baby Charities Network Manifesto.
  2. Ensure every baby born premature or sick has the best chance of survival and quality of life and achieve this by ensuring babies are born in the right place, and cared for by the right number of doctors and nurses, also as referenced in the Pregnancy and Baby Charities Network Manifesto.
  3. Ensure every parent can be by their baby’s side by introducing legislation so every parent will be entitled to an extra paid week of leave for every week their baby receives neonatal care.

Will you take action?
