Other achievements and future plans

Find out what else we achieved last year.

As well all our work supporting families, supporting professionals, campaigning for change and enabling research, last year we also:

  • Launched our superhero walk, Bliss Little Heroes.
  • Refreshed our brand, making our purpose clearer so that the people who need us can find us.
  • Created and updated information online, such as Common Infectious Illnesses and family-centred care, making it easier to access for families who need it.
  • Created a new two-day training course for our volunteers, ensuring they are providing consistent, comprehensive, emotional support to families.
  • And, crucially, it was the first year of our three year strategy, meaning that we laid the groundwork for our ambitious plans to improve care for premature and sick babies over the next two years.

We’re so proud to share with you what we’ve been able to do for premature and sick babies so far, with your help. But we know we can and must do more.

Our 2017/18 plans include

  • Increasing our number of volunteers providing emotional support and signposting to parents via our telephone and email helpline service or face to face on the neonatal unit.

  • Contributing funding to specific research projects which are designed to deliver practical improvements in babies’ care.

  • Reaching parents with the right information as early as possible in their baby’s neonatal journey by creating and updating more written information and animations.

  • Improving standards of care on neonatal units by delivering study days and developmental care training for healthcare professionals, and suggesting improvements through the Bliss Baby Charter audit and accreditation process.

  • Reporting on the state of neonatal care in Northern Ireland in order to drive forward improvements with the launch of Baby Report: Northern Ireland, in partnership with the charity Tiny Life. This will complete the UK series of Bliss Baby Reports.
