Young parents

Becoming a mum or dad is an exciting time but it can also be stressful!

It’s going to mean some big changes to your life and no matter what age you are, there will be times when you will have questions that need answering or be looked at for a bit of extra support.

YPP young mumJust because you are a teenager or in your early twenties doesn’t mean you won’t be just as good a mum or dad as anyone else, but there are things that can make being a young parent a bit daunting. It’s different for everyone, but it might put a strain on your relationship with your partner, your family and even your friends. Then there are money worries, finding out what benefits you may be entitled to, and you might have to rethink where you’re going to live.

But what if your baby also arrives much earlier than expected or is born sick and needs special care? If your baby has to stay in hospital and you can’t take them home or even give them a cuddle, it can be very upsetting and frightening.

Your baby might need lots of treatment, and perhaps they will need special types of care that you don’t fully understand. There are likely to be different doctors and nurses looking after your baby, with lots of equipment in the ward that you’ve never seen before. It’s easy to feel confused and scared.

The Bliss Young Parents Information guide gives you lots of information on a range of issues relating to having a sick or premature baby at a young age.

If you need to talk to someone for information and support please call the Bliss Family Support Freephone Helpline on 0500 618140 or email enquiries@bliss.org.uk.
