Sight and hearing tests
Eye tests
Premature babies are at increased risk of having problems with their eyes, although the situation is getting better.
An eye specialist (an ophthalmologist) should regularly examine the retina at the back of your baby's eyes, when he or she is of an appropriate age, to check that they are healthy. Sometimes a condition called Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) occurs, which can affect the retinas of very premature babies. Tests and special treatment are carried out on the unit. For more information about ROP, please click on the right hand links to download the leaflets about screening and treatment.
Hearing tests
Premature babies seem to be at a greater risk of having hearing problems than babies born at term. As a general rule, the earlier the baby is born, the greater the risk, but it is still not a common problem. Someone may test your baby's hearing before you go home, or invite you to attend an audiology clinic at a later date.
