Your name: Liz Hillier
Your volunteering role: Campaigner
Why did you start volunteering with Bliss?
After fundraising for Bliss, as a way to say thank you for the support I received from the charity after my daughter was discharged from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Norfolk, I then received an e-mail asking if I would be interested in campaigning in Ipswich. Bliss helped me arrange an initial meeting with Ben Gummer MP who then set up a meeting with Nick Hulme who is the CEO of the Ipswich Trust. I never thought in a million years that this is something I would become involved with, let alone love doing!
What do you enjoy most about your volunteering role?
It sounds a cliché but meeting new people from across the UK who have inspired and challenged me is the most enjoyable part of being a Bliss campaigner. Fighting for a cause that I am deeply passionate about on a local and national level has helped me come to terms with what happened to our daughter as you want to make sure that family-centred care is a priority on all Special Care Baby Units and NICUs.
Do you have a volunteering highlight?
Locally, getting the car parking permits adjusted so that they were more affordable for families who have to stay a long time on the SCBU at Ipswich Hospital as a result of the Bliss It’s Not a Game campaign was a real highlight. Nationally, being at the launch of the Bliss baby report at the House of Parliament in 2015 was extremely emotive. There was a sense that we could achieve change to the way that neonatal services are funded as well as placing more emphasis on the importance of family-centred care during a baby’s neonatal journey.
