The Bliss Christmas Appeal
Thanks to our amazing supporters we have reached our appeal target - please join them and help us smash it! Even the smallest gift will help us keep families and their poorly babies together. Thank you.
Nobody should be alone this Christmas. Especially a vulnerable baby who needs their mum or dad close by. For babies in hospital this Christmas, the reality is they probably won’t be with their parents as much as they need to, due to the lack of family facilities and the high costs of supporting a baby in hospital.
It is unthinkable that a baby would be separated from their parent at Christmas because there’s no room to stay nearby or because they cannot afford to travel to see their poorly baby. But Bliss has found that only five out of twenty-nine neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) – those caring for the smallest and sickest babies - have enough rooms for parents of critically ill babies. A mother of a baby born at 27 weeks told us:
Parents are not just visitors, their care is essential so their baby can grow strong enough to go home. Research shows that babies born premature or sick thrive best when their parents are closely involved in their care. But for this to happen, they have to be able to stay close by.
The average UK family will spend £800 on presents this Christmas. By comparison our research shows families spend an average of £2,252 while their poorly baby is in hospital. The costs are a huge burden for parents at an extremely worrying time and this cannot continue.
Some babies will not see their parents today at all because there is nowhere for them to stay and they cannot afford to be by their side. For a family with a baby in hospital, the best gift for them is being with their baby.
Thanks to supporters like you, Bliss was able to fund the essential research to identify the urgent need for facilities to support families with critically ill babies.
